The Arizona Diamondbacks joined the MLB in the National League West Division in 1998 as an expansion franchise. Along with the Tampa Bay Rays, the Diamondbacks are the youngest organization in baseball. 20 plus years of team history has produced an impressive amount of accolades for this young team.

Playing their home games at Chase Field, this desert climate club has racked up five NL West titles, one National League pennant, and a World Series title in their lone appearance back in 2001. These accomplishments are pretty impressive, as the team built from nothing to champions of baseball in just four seasons.

The 2001 World Series was epic. Featuring the inexperienced Diamondbacks up against a dynastic New York Yankees ball club in the wake of 9/11 and going for four World Series titles in a row, Arizona had their work cut out for them. The stacked Yankees roster seemed to tilt the series in their direction, but the heart and determination of the Diamondbacks ultimately proved to be the deciding factor. Jumping out to a two games to none lead in the series, Arizona would lose three straight when the series moved to the Bronx. However, a decisive 15-2 win in game six rallied the team for an incredible game seven to close out the series. Down by a run in the bottom of the ninth inning, smart fundamentals against Mariano Rivera, one of the game’s greatest closers of all-time, put the D-backs in a position to retake the game. After tying the game off a Tony Womack double, Luis Gonzalez placed a shot over the head of Derek Jeter, landing in the outfield and allowing Jay Bell to cross home plate for the walk-off single to win the World Series.

As this memory remains in the hearts of Arizona Diamondbacks fans, many hope the current squad can help achieve that same kind of postseason magic. Manager Torey Lovullo would love nothing more than to achieve this accolade as the skipper for the D-backs. Management cannot wait to see what he can pull off in his fourth season in the Arizona dugout. His first season marked a major advancement for the club, finishing the year at 93-69 for a 24 game improvement. Arizona won the Wild Card before being knocked out by the LA Dodgers. Lovullo was named the 2017 National League Manager of the Year. After dropping to 82 wins in 2018, the D-backs finished 2019 in second place in the NL West with a record of 85-77. Lovullo aims to eclipse this in 2020.

His roster is filled with capable starters including Carson Kelly, Christian Walker, Nick Ahmed (an NL Gold Glover in both 2018 and 2019), Eduardo Escobar, and star second baseman Ketel Marte. David Peralta takes his usual spot in left field, but has new teammates in Kole Calhoun and Starling Marte to patrol deep.

The Diamondbacks made a splash in free agency by signing star pitcher Madison Bumgarner to lead in their rotation. Followed by Robbie Ray, Luke Weaver, and young pitchers in Zac Gallen and Merrill Kelly, the Arizona pitching staff is looking good. Archie Bradley will take the mound late in games as the Arizona closer.

Legendary past players for the Arizona Diamondbacks include Randy Johnson, Paul Goldschmidt, Luis Gonzalez, Curt Schilling, and Steve Finley. More information pertaining to the history of the Arizona Diamondbacks as well as the current team can be found by clicking here.
