The small city of Green Bay, Wisconsin has been forever put on the map by their beloved football franchise, the Green Bay Packers. As the only non-profit community-owned sports team in the US, these cheese heads will make sure the Packers never leave.
Some of the most legendary names in the game have been associated with this storied franchise. Team co-founder, former player, and former coach Curly Lambeau lives on through the stadium which is named after him. Lambeau Field, the famous home of the Green Bay Packers, is known throughout the league for their passionate fans and freezing temperatures. Nicknamed “the frozen tundra”, Lambeau Field hosted the famous Ice Bowl in 1967 between the Packers and the Dallas Cowboys.
The sidelines in those days were patrolled by a man who has grown into a mythical sports figure. Vince Lombardi led the Packers to six NFL championships and victories in the first two Super Bowls. In fact his name is so synonymous with winning that the NFL named their Super Bowl trophy after him.
The Packers iconic green and gold uniforms immediately call to mind legends of the gridiron from past seasons. Countless Hall of Fame players have called Lambeau Field home over the years. Included among this prestigious list are Bart Starr, Paul Hornung, Don Hutson, Jim Taylor, Ray Nitschke, Jerry Kramer, Reggie White, and Brett Favre.
Green Bay is Title Town, winners of 11 NFL Championships and four Super Bowls. Their most recent championship came in 2010 against the Pittsburgh Steelers. Led by Aaron Rodgers, the Packers took an early lead and never looked back, winning 31-25.
The team has been trying to get back to that plateau ever since. Winning all but three division titles since that year, the Packers have yet to make it back to the big game. A talented roster, highlighted by Aaron Rodgers, one of the best players in the game today, who takes the field with a confidence few teams can match. Offensive weapons in star receiver Davante Adams and running back Aaron Jones give Rodgers a chance to win every week. The defense, led by linebacker Za’Darius Smith, keeps this squad in the game each week. Having two first round picks in 2019, the Packers elected to upgrade their defense by choosing Rashan Gary at number 12, a defensive end out of Michigan and Darnell Savage at number 21, a defensive back out of Maryland. The Packers 2021 first round draft pick was Eric Stokes, a cornerback from Georgia. Taken 29th overall, this talented defensive player is hoping to begin his rookie year as a starter.
The 2018 season was frustrating for Packers fans as Green Bay took another step back to a final regular season record that barred them from a postseason berth. The Packers made major headlines by firing head coach Mike McCarthy towards the end of the year. After nearly 13 full seasons and one Super Bowl title, McCarthy was unceremoniously let go. This was a strong message coming from upper management that they expected more from this team and would make the tough decisions in pursuit of their next championship ring. Matt LaFleur was named the new head coach in Green Bay. An offensive pedigree that includes time as quarterback coach and offensive coordinator, LaFluer got right to work.
Sometimes a change is necessary, and the Pack evidently made the right choice as Green Bay shot back up to division winners in 2019 with a record of 13-3 and a first round bye in the playoffs. A great game against Seattle in the Divisional Round set up Green Bay against the San Francisco 49ers in the NFC Championship. A frustrating game for the defense, this one ended with a score of 37-20 in favor of the 49ers. Rodgers and company regrouped in the offseason and made another push in 2020. Going 13-3 again for another division title, Green Bay clinched the bye and would face off against the LA Rams in the NFC Divisional Round. Cruising to a 32-18 victory, the Pack would face Tom Brady and the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in the NFC Championship game. However, the season would end here with a loss at Lambeau by a score of 31-26. While Tampa will go on to the Super Bowl, the Packers will channel their disappointment into a rage-filled 2021 season in which they will aim to bring home the hardware.
