Having made the move to the Twin Cities following the 1960 season, the Minnesota Twins franchise has a history spanning all the back to 1901 in Washington. In the 115+ years of their existence, there are only three World Series titles to their name (two in Minnesota and one in Washington), but their most recent Fall Classic victory in 1991 is remembered for one of the most memorable finishes in World Series history.

In a scoreless Game 7 entering the 10th inning, Minnesota Twins starting pitcher Jack Morris refused to be pulled from game. His determination powered him through as he retired the side in order. This set the stage for a dramatic finish in the bottom of the inning when pinch hitter Gene Larkin, despite an injured knee, lined a shot to deep left center field allowing Dan Gladden to score from 3rd base, winning the World Series in front of the overjoyed home town crowd.

Today’s squad, under the leadership of first year Manager Rocco Baldelli, aspire to reach the same plateau in front of the crowd at their new stadium, Target Field. Off to a great start, Twins fans are excited for what the future holds for this club. Sporting a healthy mix of veteran talent in Bryon Buxton and Miguel Sano, along with young players in Mitch Carver, CJ Cron, and Jonathan Schoop, the Twins have a fairly strong lineup from top to bottom. Strong performances by Jorge Polanco, Eddie Rosario, Max Kepler, and Nelson Cruz make this a tough team to face. The improved pitching rotation has become a source of strength and not weakness with Jose Berrios leading the way with Jake Odorizzi, Kyle Gibson, and Michael Pineda right behind.

Their record of 78-84 in the 2018 campaign was the catalyst for a managerial change that could spark this club. While the early returns look favorable, Baldelli and his group will not be satisfied until the Twin Cities have another World Series title to their credit. Look for Minnesota to make a strong playoff push in 2019 with championship aspirations. Adding veteran closer Sergio Romo via a trade with Miami at the deadline could prove pivotal down the stretch.

This great team has had some real standout fan favorite players in Kent Hrbek (the hometown kid), Chuck Knoblauch, who was named the AL Rookie of the Year that season, gutsy pitcher Jack Morris, and the most beloved Minnesota Twins player of all time, Kirby Puckett.
