Having made the move to the Twin Cities following the 1960 season, the Minnesota Twins franchise has a history spanning all the back to 1901 in Washington. In the 115+ years of their existence, there are only three World Series titles to their name (two in Minnesota and one in Washington), but their most recent Fall Classic victory in 1991 is remembered for one of the most memorable finishes in World Series history.

In a scoreless Game 7 entering the 10th inning, Minnesota Twins starting pitcher Jack Morris refused to be pulled from game. His determination powered him through as he retired the side in order. This set the stage for a dramatic finish in the bottom of the inning when pinch hitter Gene Larkin, despite an injured knee, lined a shot to deep left center field allowing Dan Gladden to score from 3rd base, winning the World Series in front of the overjoyed home town crowd.

This great team had some real standout fan favorite players in Kent Hrbek (the hometown kid), Chuck Knoblauch, who was named the AL Rookie of the Year that season, gutsy pitcher Jack Morris, and the most beloved Minnesota Twins player of all time, Kirby Puckett. Today’s squad, under the leadership of Manager Paul Molitor since 2014, aspire to reach the same plateau in front of the crowd at their new stadium, Target Field. He has signed a three year extension that will keep him in the Twin Cities through 2020. Sporting a healthy mix of veteran talent in Brian Dozier and Joe Mauer, along with young players in Bryon Buxton and Miguel Sano, the Twins have a fairly strong lineup from top to bottom. Changes to the pitching staff will be the key to this team making the jump to serious contender. After Ervin Santana and Jose Berrios there is a big drop off.

Their record of 85-77 in the 2017 campaign earned them a wild card spot. However, the wild card would spell the undoing for this franchise as they lost 8-4 to the New York Yankees. Look for Minnesota to make another run in 2018 if they can address some of their pitching rotation issues.
