The action in the 2025 tournament was incredible as Western Michigan, a team whose only two NCAA titles came in Cross Country back in 1964 and 1965, fought against some of the biggest schools in the game to make their mark on the sport. Moving past Minnesota State in double overtime in the Regional Semifinals, they would face Massachusetts. An unlikely 2-1 victory sent them to the National Semifinals where they would eliminate the reigning champion Denver Pioneers, in a 3-2 double overtime classic. The improbable run brought Western Michigan all the way to the championship game.
Facing off against Boston University in a championship matchup is about as intimidating as it gets. However, for the players of Western Michigan, it was all business. They opened up the scoring less than two minutes into the game. BU fought back to tie it but the Broncos tacked on another before the end of the period for a 2-1 lead. Opening up to a 3-1 lead in the second, Boston fought back once again, narrowing the lead to one goal.
Heading into the third period with a 3-2 lead, Western Michigan knew that the next 20 minutes would define their legacy. They shut the door on Boston, putting three more goals on the board while playing excellent defense to end with a 6-2 victory. Western Michigan had done the impossible and looked absolutely dominant as they did it.
Can they go for the repeat in 2026? College hockey fans are excited for the next chapter of this story. Will another hard checking team come along and impose their will while lighting the lamp to crown a new champion?
