Born in the Roxbury neighborhood of Boston, New Edition was formed by Bobby Brown along with Ricky Bell, Michael Bivins, Ronnie DeVoe, and Ralph Tresvant. Wearing their intention on their sleeve, the group aimed to be the “New Edition” of the Jackson 5. Their smooth vocals and quality pop sound caught the attention of a producer who immediately signed them and recorded their first album, Candy Girl, which was released in 1983.
The title track “Candy Girl” shot to number one on the US R&B Singles Chart and the UK Singles Chart, prompting a major concert tour. A self-titled second album would not be far behind, keeping the group in the creative flow while they continued to tour and gain traction with fans. Songs like “Cool It Now” and “Mr. Telephone Man” helped the album go certified double platinum.
A third album was released right on its heels which marked a turning point for the group as Bobby Brown broke off to pursue a solo career. However, the group continued on with appearances in Knight Rider and recording a cover for the soundtrack to The Karate Kid, Part II. Johnny Gill was soon added to the group, bringing them back to six members.
Their fifth studio release, Heart Break, saw the group morph with a more adult sound. Hit singles in “If This Isn’t Love”, “You’re Not My Kind of Girl”, and others earned double platinum certification and their most commercially successful record.
The 1990s saw the members of New Edition go in various directions to pursue other projects before coming together to reunite.
