The Amazin’ Mets have been dazzling the crowds out in Queens, NY since their inaugural season in 1962. A staple team in the National League East Division, the Mets have carved out a place for themselves in the Big Apple with diehard fans who bleed orange and blue.
The loyal fans who endured the team’s growing pains in their early years were rewarded with an improbable World Series victory in 1969 over the heavily favored Baltimore Orioles. Still thought of as one of the biggest upsets in World Series history, the team was nicknamed the Miracle Mets. Tom Seaver and Jerry Koosman were dominant on the mound throughout this run and are still considered among the greatest players ever to wear the Mets uniform.
It wasn’t until 1986 that Mets fans celebrated another title in the Fall Classic. An incredible lineup, featuring star players Darryl Strawberry, Gary Carter, Keith Hernandez, and Dwight Gooden defeated the Boston Red Sox in seven games to earn their ticker-tape parade through the Canyon of Heroes as champions of baseball.
Many lean years would follow, keeping the Mets away from top contention until the team acquired catcher Mike Piazza in 1998. An unprecedented World Series matchup would follow in 2000, featuring the New York Mets in a crosstown Subway Series against the rival New York Yankees. The five game series ended with a Yankees victory.
Following their last World Series appearance in 2015, the team has failed to make it back to the Fall Classic. The organization decided to bring in Buck Showalter for the 2022 season to manage the clubhouse. He took the team to a 101-61 record for a 2nd place finish in the NL East. Though their postseason was short (bounced by the Padres in the Wild Card), there is plenty of reason to be optimistic in 2023.
The incredible pitching rotation features Max Scherzer, the newly acquired Justin Verlander, Kodai Senga, Carlos Carrasco, and David Peterson. Drew Smith is a solid set up man who will be ready to hand it over to the multiple Mets closers. The field is filled with solid players like Omar Narvaez, Pete Alonso, Jeff McNeil, Francisco Lindor, Eduardo Escobar, Mark Canha, Brandon Nimmo, Starling Marte, and Daniel Vogenbach.
The pundits believe that this team is strong enough to make a deep playoff push and maybe even take home a World Series Championship. It will be a true test for the orange and blue. Faith in this ball club runs deep and Citi Field will be mobbed with a passionate fan base eager to cheer along their home town heroes.
