Oklahoma City has been home to the NBA’s Thunder since 2008. Prior to that, this franchise was based out of Seattle as the SuperSonics. A team that was well-loved in their home city, Seattle boasted a championship from 1979 where they defeated the Washington Bullets in five games after having lost to them in the Finals the year before.

Following that great run, Seattle was a perennial contender, advancing to the Conference Finals four more times, resulting in one additional Finals appearance after the 1995-1996 season. They would lose to the Michael Jordan led Chicago Bulls in six games. Their last few seasons in Seattle saw the team struggle, including their final season which featured the worst record in team history. Hope was on the horizon with the arrival of 2007 second overall draft pick Kevin Durant. Bringing him into the mix had fans excited, but the contentious move to Oklahoma City after the sale of the team left the SuperSonics fan base devastated. All remnants of the past were left behind in Seattle.

Nevertheless, the NBA season continued with a new team in a new city. The Oklahoma City Thunder were named in reference to their location in Tornado Alley, and the Thunderbirds, the US Army’s 45th Infantry Division which is based in Oklahoma City. Featuring Durant in tow as the super star anchor of the club, the Thunder had reached the playoffs by 2010 and made an appearance in the NBA Finals in 2012. They were aided by Russell Westbrook, drafted fourth overall in 2008, just six days before they became the Thunder) and James Harden, selected third overall in 2009. These high draft picks translated into superstar power that propelled the team forward.

Though Harden would eventually be traded to Houston and Durant would leave for Golden State in free agency, Westbrook and company continue to work towards bringing home the first NBA Championship in Oklahoma City. Having Paul George traded to the Thunder in 2017 was a boost for this squad as he brought his amazing skills to the court each night.

Some big moves last offseason shook this team, but left them in a good place with a tremendous amount of potential on the horizon. Russell Westbrook was traded to Houston for star player Chris Paul and a number of first round draft picks. Paul George left for the Clippers in a trade that netted Oklahoma City Shai Gilgeous-Alexander, Danilo Gallinari and even more 1st round draft picks. Terrance Ferguson rounds out the talent on this OKC squad. Undrafted star Luguentz Dort exploded onto the scene for this team and is an important part of the offense.

OKC picked up Ricky Rubio, Kelly Oubre Jr., Ty Jerome, and Jalen Lecque in an offseason trade with Phoenix which saw Chris Paul and Abdel Nader head out to Phoenix. Lecque would later be traded to Indiana for TJ Leaf and a second round pick. Danny Green would also end up with the Thunder in a three team trade. Danilo Gallinari has left to sign with Atlanta.

Further offseason trades set the team up for the future as the loss of Steven Adams in a four team deal brings in George Hill, Darius Miller, a protected 2023 first round pick from Denver and two second round picks (in 2023 and 2024 respectively).

This team has the potential to play at a high rate right now and, with the draft picks they have stock-piled, could be setting themselves up for a dynasty in the future. 2020 saw the Thunder make a playoff appearance and push Houston to the brink in a seven game opening round series.

This franchise has been no stranger to superstar talent, whether in Seattle or Oklahoma City. Among the very best to play for the Seattle SuperSonics and/or Oklahoma City Thunder include Russell Westbrook, Ray Allen, Kevin Durant, Gary Payton, Shawn Kemp, Paul George, and James Harden.
