The Washington Football Team are a franchise has makes people just scratch their heads in confusion. What is happening with this once dynastic team? Lacking consistency at quarterback over the last few seasons (ten starters over the last three years), it seemed heading into the 2020 season that their hopes were pinned to Dwayne Haskins, the rookie taken as the 15th overall pick in the 2019 draft. While rookie campaign was not overly impressive, the team around him needed to improve as well. However, Haskins was cut from the team before the end of the season amid poor play and additional factors.

Ron Rivera signed on as the new coach for the Football Team in 2020, and has his work cut out for him. Having won just three games in 2019, this team is in need of an overhaul in many key positions. The quarterback position, once thought to be locked in, is up for grabs again. Haskins was benched early in the season in favor of former Panthers backup QB Kyle Allen who was, in turn, benched in favor of veteran Alex Smith. Coming back from a life-threatening leg injury two seasons ago, Smith galvanized this team and led them to their first NFC East Championship since 2015.

Alex Smith was nursing a sore calf which thrust Taylor Heineke into the starting role in the playoffs. Having joined the team practice squad just a month before, and being promoted to the active roster just a few weeks prior, Heineke shined like a star for this team as they played their hearts out against a stacked Buccaneers team. While the game ended 31-23 in favor of Tampa, this group proved that they have a ton of heart. Fans in Washington cannot wait for next season and hope that Smith returns for another go at the title.

Terry McLaurin put together an impressive rookie year in 2019 with nearly 1,000 yards and eclipsed it by going over 1,100 in 2020. However, there is a very significant drop off on the depth chart from there. Washington would like to see at least one big time receiver added to compliment him and draw away some of the defensive coverage. Jeremy Sprinkle is not the answer at tight end. A quarterback needs a solid tight end to use as a release valve, and Logan Thomas came in from Detroit to help. The running back spot with both Antonio Gibson and J.D. McKissic is ready to go.

A defense that features top talent in Jonathan Allen, Matt Ioannidis, and Landon Collins, Washington has a base from which to build a tougher squad. Montez Sweat, their 2019 first round draft pick, is turning into a great linebacker. Washington used their second overall draft pick in 2020 to grab Chase Young out of Ohio State. This defensive end can get to the quarterback in a hurry.

Winners of three Super Bowls, the dedicated crowd that inhabits the stadium on Sundays in Washington cheers on their team with unmatched fervor. Washington fans come out to FedEx Field in droves to support their beloved hometown football team. This, of course, was not the case during the 2020 season.

It has been 23 years since the Lombardi Trophy came to DC and the current Football Team squad hopes to cement themselves in the burgundy and gold lore with a Super Bowl victory. Facing stiff opposition in the famously competitive NFC East, this team will need to be firing on all cylinders the rest of the way if they hope to end up with confetti and a ticker tape parade in downtown Washington, DC.

Legends of the past for the Washington Football Team include Sammy Baugh, Sonny Jurgensen, Joe Theissman, Art Monk, John Riggins, and Darrell Green. For more information about the Washington Football Team click here.
