Formed on Staten Island in New York, the Wu-Tang Clan is an absolutely iconic hip hop group. Getting their start in the early 90s as individual artists, the members of this group rebranded with new nicknames and joined forces to become a group. Taking inspiration from the New York City streets, comic books, and Kung-Fu movies, the Wu-Tang Clan was born in 1993.
This super group features the talents of legendary artists RZA, GZA, Inspectah Deck, U-God, Ghostface Killah, Method Man, Raekwon, Masta Killa, Cappadonna, and the late Ol’ Dirty Bastard.
Following the release of their single “Protect Ya Neck”, the group turned heads and eventually signed with Loud/RCA. They released Enter the Wu-Tang (36 Chambers), their debut album in November 1993 to critical acclaim. This album is widely considered a hip-hop masterpiece and allowed the group members latitude in negotiating solo contracts.
Releasing their second album in 1997, Wu-Tang Forever, the group found themselves debuting at the top of the Billboard 200. Between their second wildly successful album and the success of the individual members in their solo careers, Wu-Tang Clan became larger than life.
They would go on to release The W in 2000 and Iron Flag in 2001 to even more success. It would be several years before their next collaborative release, partly due to the untimely death of Ol’ Dirty Bastard. Cappadonna was acknowledged as an official member of the group on this album.
They would unite again in 2014 for A Better Tomorrow. They also sold their 31-track album, “Once Upon a Time in Shaolin” to an investor. To date, very little of the album has ever been heard by the public.
